Students talking during class certainly isn’t a rarity, so why not allow that to flourish in an educational way? One of the best ways to do this is by breaking students into groups of two or three and allowing them to have a normal, everyday conversation with one catch—the entire conversation must be in Spanish. You can write specific topics on notecards and pass them around to groups, or you can allow them to create their own topics, whichever you feel is more beneficial to the overall lesson.
Giving students creative freedom can make the activity more fun, but the most important part is giving the students the chance to take what you’re teaching them and put it into action. Plus, if any students are running into issues involving pronunciation or sentence structure, a group activity like this gives them the chance to problem-solve with one another.
For more personal interactions, you can stick to one-on-one groups. However, instead of simply having a conversation about a specific topic, allow students to interview one another. From their favorite color to their favorite food and beyond, giving students the opportunity to conduct these interviews will help them learn basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. One-on-one interviews also give students the chance to learn more about their fellow classmates, which can encourage friendships to flourish during the curriculum.
This Spanish-language take on the card game “spoons” is always a great way to combine fun, education, and student collaboration. Similar to the small group conversations, you’ll need to separate students into groups of three or more.
First, you will need to write out a deck of cards, with one-half of the cards displaying infinitive verbs and the other half containing the corresponding conjugations. Then, separate students into their groups and have them sit in a circle while you place a handful of spoons in the center of each group. Students start the game with cards in their hands, and when the dealer passes around a card, students can either pass it on to the next person or use it if they have a corresponding conjugation or infinitive verb. When students match two corresponding cards, they can take a spoon from the middle of the circle. At the end of the game, whoever has the most spoons is the winner.
